Imagine federation as a spectrum where on one end everyone has his own instance (server) and on the other end one centralized server. What would be the best balance to get the most users to the Fediverse? Imagine if a reputable (in terms of being pro-user) company like Mozilla takes on creating a centralized service for regular social media users. Then programmers and advanced users can get connected with regular users without the annoying restrictions and at the same time, regular users can enjoy private and privacy-friendly clients to connect with others.

Is "defederated" instances a synonym for "blocked" instances? are they read-only without interactions or they can't even be read from other instances? E.g: if beehaw is defederated can I still browse its subs from lemmy.world?

You're overestimating Mastodon. I'd say both are closely similar in demographics.

There was a subreddit for cool/interesting/obscure websites. I forgot its name. Would be nice to have a sublemmy for it here.

I think we have /c/videos, but thanks for sharing
If you're used to creating multiple accounts on Reddit, try to create them here on separate instances. This distributes the load on instances and is important to keeping Lemmy federated. E.g: not having onr instance becoming "too big". The same deal with cryptocurrencies mining pools.

All websites suck, but some are more sucky than others.
... if you know how to use virtual desktops and shortcuts. You can't look at two screens at a time, anyways. One use case I can understand is having a 2nd monitor for checking stock prices or checking for a certain event. Other than that, I don't see how it contributes to "productivity" while working or coding for example. P.S: Tiling WM users may understand this post more
