I mean this person seems to be not doing it maliciously. As they say, if it wasn't them, it would be someone else. Pushing archive to improve their security is great for everyone. As long as this person doesn't do anything actually malicious, they're in the clear as far as I'm concerned.

I think it would be best if they drew attention to the people who are being horrible, instead of repeating the horrible things they said. So yeah, you're not wrong for thinking this is demeaning.

So to put this in more practical terms, one would neither vote for Hitler or 101% Hitler, and instead vote for The Other Person who Isn't Much Hitler At All, or abstain or something, and protest and take action in other ways?

Hmm. I can understand this perspective. I guess its a bit tough. As a trans person I would find it very hard to do anything that isn't actively working against trump being in power, because if he gets in power it's very likely that my life will be in danger (if I was an American). But at the same time, as mentioned before, it wouldn't be an easy sell for me to be voting pro-harris.

I guess your scenario doesn't mean you're going to vote for trump, just that you'll vote third party or spoil your ballot?

Calling mass shooters a fact of life, implying we can't ban guns, calling climate activists dangerous criminals. But I'm autistic so I can't tell if its sarcasm or if you genuinely hold those beliefs.

    Context:

    • I am not an american, so there may be some missing knowledge for me about the american electoral system.
    • I abhor Israel's genocide in Gaza, and I abhor the biden administration's support of (and Harris' seeming continued support of) the genocide.
    • My understanding is that Trump is just as, if not more supportive of the genocide in Gaza, and on top of this has his sights on doing some truly terrible things in the US re: minorities, trans rights, etc

So with that context, my question is thus: It seems clear that Trump wouldn't change anything about the genocide in Gaza, and that he would bring more evil than the current status quo. So if you're an american voter, you obviously can't let Trump get in. But, Harris is gross to vote for as well, even if its a "lesser of the two evils" thing. What do you do? As far as I understand its basically one or the other, you dont really have any third party to vote for right?

I didn't say they don't serve a purpose, I said that customers didn't ask for it/don't want it. I also said AI, not LLM (initially).

They serve a purpose, but in many cases are not well suited or ready for production.

    Examples?

I use a food delivery app that added an AI chatbot to supposedly help you with restaurant and food suggestions, and it wasn't able to handle simple dietary restrictions (whereas standard filtering options on the search work just fine). A prompt as simple as "I'm looking for restaurants with vegan sandwiches" would return places that had vegan food and/or sandwiches. Even if it worked properly, just having adequate filter options and robust search is far more suited to the kinds of things users are doing on this kind of app.

Search engines putting their in-house LLM generated slop above actual search results, which is the equivalent of ensuring that the first search result is from a garbage site with hit or miss accuracy of information or relevance to the topic. I don't imagine it will be long before we start to see generative ai image results being served on the fly by in-house products when you search for images. Pass the user query to an LLM to generate a prompt for image gen, then pass that to image gen and bam! Slop!

Every fucking product has some stupid gradient-coloured ✨ AI button shoved into it now and it drives me up the wall.

Putting LLM auto complete into IDEs? Great, as long as I can turn it off and as long as they're not training it on the code I write in the IDE. AI denoising in rendering software? Excellent. Image infill/outfill using AI in photo editing and drawing software? Spot on.

Well for one, the clickbait BS has become worse because of the LLMs :P I think its cool tech, don't get me wrong. Before it started getting shoved into every product and before its environmental impact started skyrocketing, I was keenly interested in it. In all honesty, I still am, but I'm keenly interested in what happens with it after the bubble pops and the real use cases are left behind. Text summarisation and code prediction are two genuine use cases I've seen have tremendous success. But I don't need an LLM built into every product I use, and I don't need every product I use to be training LLMs.

  • I'm trying my best to dive back into the past and play all the gems that I missed as a kid because I was either born too late or too much of a kid to consider playing them. I found myself really disappointed going back to the old mario nes/snes titles because they felt really bad to play as I've become accustomed to modern platformer design sensibilities (like coyote time and responsive movement). Are there any oldies+goldies that have stood up to the test of time and not shown their age in the same way? Or are so good that they're worth playing despite showing their age? Preferably avoiding racing, sports, and final fantasy-esque titles. Not really interested in anything more recent than PS2 era either. I already have Earthbound in my sights as it isn't one I've played before but it comes highly recommended.

I'm very, very new to nix and nixOS both - I come from imperative workflows and very very rarely anything determinative, so this is all brand new to me. As an example of the kind of thing I don't understand how to do, let's take an example repo I've been bouncing off: https://github.com/GideonWolfe/Chameleon On a "normal" system, I can get pip and python ready, and then `make install` and I'm off to the races. With NixOS, I've got as far as adding python3 and gnumake to my configuration.nix packages. (I have also discovered that putting python in my system packages was the wrong move, so some advice on how better to go about this would be cool too.) I can't for the life of me wrap my head around what I'm supposed to do, and so many people online are using flakes but I'm on stable 23.11 (and quite daunted by flakes) so I'd prefer if this was from that POV. Can anyone speak to any of these points? I've tried reading the docs but it's very confusing for some reason.

So, I live in the UK and I'm on some probably endless waiting list to start talking to people about things, but I am also financially privileged and if I can use that to expedite my process in some way, that would improve my quality of life tenfold. My cry for help, is, what can I do privately? How do I do it safely? Are there any "official" private sources for anything? I am interested in UK centric advice for (but not limited to): - voice feminisation - HRT in an environment where I can regularly have someone with degrees in this shit tell me that my body is doing the right things - related to the above, fertility support (in the scenario I want to have kids biologically) - diagnosis of gender dysphoria - any other "superficial" feminzation - I don't want to sexually transition, I'm keeping the tool Thanks in advance, blahaj lemmy

I've noticed in my time using Beehaw, that navigation has been a bit funky Example: - I scroll through my feed and find a post I want to check out, on page 3 or something. - I click the post and check it out, and want to go back to my feed - I "go back" (on mobile with the back gesture) one time - I have now returned to page 2, instead of page 3, of my feed Am I missing something obvious? Is there a "close" button on opened posts that I should be using instead? Having to go back and then scroll down and go to the next page to get to my "actual" page is quite tedious
