OOTL: I'm confused. What is this? I've been using Firefox for years and I have no idea what this button is/was or why people would be annoyed by it.

  • How to handle getting overwhelmed late game?

What part is overwhelming for you?

It kind of just feels like compounding complexity. The projects themselves require a lot more steps and sometimes resources from around the map. Plus with all the increased throughput we get from upgraded miners and belts doing things at scale involves a LOT of machines. So the numbers kind of keep ballooning as we also need to handle a lot of different inputs.

Then there are all the old inefficient factories which I should tear down/upgrade, but it's just really daunting knowing just how much I'm gonna have to add to make it all efficient.

Overprovision everything so I guarantee there’s enough everywhere.

Honestly that's what I started doing at some point. Just try to overestimate so hopefully I don't need to do more math.

  • My friend and I were playing for sort of our first time at 1.0. (We played a bit a few months ago, but stopped around computers when we heard 1.0 would be soon.) We were having fun, but as we got later in the game, it felt like things got really overwhelming and slowed down a lot. Especially once we got to T7/8. We ended up spending like a week just to mostly get nuclear power running. (We still aren't handling the waste completely.) We tried using blueprints a bit, but they were kind of clunky and it felt like there was only so much we could do with them. At this point we're on pause with the game. Does anyone have any suggestions for making things go smoother late game or is this just how the game is after a certain point? It feels bad stopping so close to the end, but the way things were going it felt like we might have ended up spending more time on the last few tiers than everything before that.

It depends. Usually I’m just looking for some game or show I like. The few of those I’ve looked into that have a community have like a handful of users, infrequent posts, or auto-posted threads with no comments beyond the bot post.

EDIT: Also, do you know how to get to your link on Memmy? For me it just brought me back to the main feed.

The only real issue I have is that there aren’t that many active communities for more niche topics. I hope it’ll get there someday, but for now we have Linux or Star Trek, take your pick. :P

Did it really predict these things? We’ve had data surveillance and algorithmic targeting for a while before Watchdogs. A lot of “prescient” sci-fi is just writing about stuff that’s already happening but which people don’t pay much attention to.

I was thinking about this recently when I had to look at a website without an ad blocker. (Btw, does anyone know an Adblock option that works for iOS Lemmy? Memmy’s browser doesn’t block anything.)

The website was absolutely packed to the brim with ads. Animated, expanding, moving, etc. All competing for your attention. How can ANY of those ads be getting enough attention for it to be worth it?

Yeah. It’s not hard to see why people don’t trust the media anymore. Amongst other things, the big ones I can think about in my life: They uncritically parroted lies the government used to justify the Iraq War and they regularly gave equal air time/consideration to climate deniers as though they were equivalent to climate scientists.

It’s still crazy to me how much of the bad shit the government has done has been declassified and publicly available and people still just kind of ignore it. Who needs censorship when people are just willing to overlook reality? Or even worse, just make up nonsense.

It’s mostly just finding some reviews/word of mouth sources that you trust and which align with your tastes.

On the review side of things Second Wind covers a decent spread of indie games. I also occasionally see some new stuff from streamers, but that’s more of a toss up since there’s a lot of sponsored coverage.

I know you're joking and that there's a lot of garbage videos out there, but what possible value would there be in sending a novel per second? Can anyone read a novel per second? It only makes sense to use the higher bandwidth to send higher density information like video, audio, or interactive media like games.

Even if that were true, you know what would make them not look bad? Doing the right thing in the first place.

    EDIT:

Think about this from the reverse perspective: If you wanted to maximize your chances at success, it’s better to maximize the potential cost to businesses and governments for not listening to you.

The perspective of “You’re making us look bad by… showing the ways we’re not doing good.” Is a really backwards, elite-oriented way of understanding politics. Politicians are in theory supposed to serve the people, not the other way around.

I had wildly different experiences with teachers within my own schools growing up. There was legitimately no standard that valued this kind of nuanced exploration of the world. Just a focus on standardized tests. It was almost entirely on the individual teachers to spend more of their time and effort to go any further than that.

I had some great teachers that made everything interesting and taught us more like the classes I eventually had in college, but I definitely have had more that were like this one math teacher I remember who, when I asked about why we had to do a math problem in a specific way we were learning about, answer something along the lines of “because I say so.”

And if it took ads on the pause screen to get you to see the issues with growth capitalism,

I don't know why you'd assume that. I'm pretty staunchly communist from a mix of seeing our current problems and understanding history enough to know that this didn't start yesterday. But if it takes companies being really obviously greedy for some consumers to see anything is wrong, it doesn't hurt to try to focus their anger to a productive understanding of the problem rather than whatever other nonsense they might get drawn to.

As far as alternatives. I'm always up front with people in saying that I don't have precise answers for what our future ought to be after capitalism. That's a difficult problem and up to everyone to work together to figure that out. But there is no future where we stick with capitalism. Or at least, not one we'd want to live in for very long. It's a cruel system and it's going to be responsible for ending the human habitable environment if we don't do something about that. People need to understand this and they need to understand that tweaking around the edges isn't going to fix the issue.

The thing about if they were ok with a reasonable profit is a thought experiment or rhetorical device more than it's a proposed solution. It'd be nice if it worked that way. Capitalists want us to think things do or could work that way. Hence corporations saying they NEED to cut costs or raise prices while continuing to make increasing profits. But it's important to understand why it could never work that way, at least for very long.

  • I mostly like Doctor Who for being a fun, campy show. I stopped watching after Capaldi initially because it felt like the show wasn't really doing that anymore. I've been re-watching the modern show after checking out classic Who for the first time along with family recently. We recently got back up to where I had stopped and... I'm still not really feeling it. But the show has been on for quite a while since then. So I'm kind of curious what it's like now and if it's worth pushing through/skipping ahead to get to a part that I'll like more.

Over the last few years my family and I have binged all of Star Trek, then moved on to Star Trek adjacent shows like The Orville and Stargate. At the moment we're not really watching anything sci-fi. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for similar shows (or maybe some books) that fill the void left by Star Trek. In particular I really like the episodes that deal with interacting with other civilizations, diplomacy, and exploration more-so than say, an anomaly episode.

I've been very overweight for a long time. Lately I've been trying to eat healthier and lose weight. (among dealing with other nutritional deficiencies.) One of the big problems I have though is that I have a lot of trouble eating foods with weird textures, smells, tastes, etc. This of course includes a lot of vegetables and some kinds of healthier proteins like fish. A doctor I was working with recommended talking to a nutritionist who is familiar with these kind of problems. However, I didn't find them to be that helpful. They didn't really have a good understanding of what kind of things bothered me and didn't really seem to want to learn or incorporate that into a plan. I got a lot of "Well can't you just try to put up with some of these things that bother you?" So eventually I gave up with them. So I'm back to eating either miserably small portions of unhealthy foods (which doesn't really solve the nutrition problem and makes me hungry) or a handful of rather bland healthier foods that are fine to eat but just make me sad. Does anyone have experience navigating these kinds of problems? What did you do? Do you have any suggestions? Types of foods, recipes, resources that deal with this, etc?

Obviously spoilers ahead: I recently got to the lower city and after taking a long rest I was ambushed by some of Astarion’s vampire spawn siblings who want to take him back with them. The dialogue suggests that killing them would close off the option to have Astarion ascend later, but it seems like I can’t avoid fighting with them. I thought maybe using nonlethal attacks would be the way, but upon reading the description it doesn’t work on undead. What am I supposed to do if I don’t want to kill them? I tried looking up the quest on some wikis/guides, but they don’t seem to give advice on that option. They just mention that if you fail in this encounter Astarion could be kidnapped, which… wouldn’t be ideal considering at the moment I have no spare party members to fill the 4th slot due to… circumstances…but I’d also prefer not to shut off the option for this quest line.
