I genuinely suffer from this grief all the time. I am not gonna claim I have anything solved but I can share a few things I do. Firstly I understand/believe we are past a few critical tipping points and there's a good chance of things getting real bad (especially for marginalised communities - wealth buys some protection for longer). I trust any path humanity has through (waves hands) all this boils down to connection - with nature, with community, with 'source' (whatever that means).

I am devoted to doing the little things that are in front of me to do. Caring for the people that I care for, caring for nature in little ways. I am fortunate that I have a career that's in an area I care about too. And I look at the stars, the ocean, the trees. I often say sorry to them. And I know they will go on after me. Taking that time helps me.

This quote I saw on twitter a loong time ago sums up how I get through and I often look at it

Took a very rare long weekend to hang out with visiting family today and even though they do my head in sometimes it was just lovely to have a day in the sun not having to solve anyone's problems 😎

I have some work to finish up before tomorrow but I am seriously thinking of just having a shower and going to bed. I am so tired today.

    Oh yeah great tips. Thanks.

I also pop a cup half filled with vinegar on the top shelf of the dishwasher when its looking a bit festy. Just a short cycle with that and no detergent is good. Then a normal wash gets rid of any residue

DIY cleaning stuff - my ideas (rate my setup!)

I've been playing around with DIY cleaning at home and thought I'd share my current setup. Love to hear suggestions or other tips **Equipment** * I bought a couple of glass spray bottles from amazon but you could reuse old ones (mine had all broke) * box of rags - I like microfibre but also old tshirts and tea towels (tea towels are great for drying off surfaces) * old toothbrush for fiddly bits in the bathroom **Basic cleaner - option 1** : Grease / shiny things / tough surfaces - fill up bottle with 3:1 white vinegar to water - add a good bloop of dishwashing soap - I add in a few drops of eucalyptus oil (optional) I use this for most things. People caution against using it for stone top benches. I haven't had an issue but if you want to be cautious use this **Basic cleaner - option 2**: Gentle and deodorising - fill up bottle with 100% water - add a good bloop of dish washing soap - add a couple of teaspoons of bicarb - I add in a few drops of eucalyptus oil (optional) Don't mix the vinegar + bicarb. They will neutralise each other and add nothing. If you are sensitive to smells etc - use option 2 for everything ## In the bathroom **Not quite basic glass and metal cleaner and disinfectant** You can use the vinegar mix for this but I have a fair bit of glass so I bought a litre of isopropyl alcohol from amazon and mixed this in a separate bottle that lives in the bathroom: * 70% Isopropyl alchohol * 30% water (you want a 70% mix for disinfecting) * Bloop of dish washing soap * optional drops of oil - again I do eucalyptus or clove oil but doesn't matter **toilets and drains** * a tablespoon or two of bicarb in the drain or in the bowl and flush with water is simple gentle cleaner * For the shower I have one of those squidgy glass wipers and a refillable dish cleaner wand thing for the shower - filled with dishwash soap and some drops of clove oil). I wipe down the excess water after every shower and once a week give it a scrub with the dish cleaner wand and dish soap. I do still use a name brand toilet cleaner once a week and maybe once a month use some oxygen cleaner or bleach on the shower tiles but I'd like an alternative. **Hard floors** I've got a spray mop and am still working through a bulk by of some eco floor cleaner but I'm thinking i'll just use mix #2 (bicarb) above when that runs out - suggestions welcome

I don't have kids but I went with a friend and her kid to one of the toy libraries in the west and I was amazed by how much stuff there was and how well looked after it was too. That kid has had an amazing array of toys over the last few years - even little bikes and dress up stuff. it's so cool

Well in my local elections I had a choice between a greens candidate who seemed ok if a little bland and an antivax cooker. So that made it easy.

Saw the candidate list for city of Melbourne today though. That is just BONKERS.

I have done the recruitment thing from both side and trust me - I know it sucks but it can take time!! Hold in there. Also I think it's ok to contact to ask about progress after, say week/week and a half. If it's a more senior or niche position it can take a bit longer to sift through.

::: spoiler I know you know this logically but in case it helps to hear it from another voice -

Enjoy the damn squishmallow. You are allowed little comforts. Little sources of pleasure and joy are as important for survival as security and health needs. No-one should struggle for any of them and it's a disgrace on our species that anyone does.

But do not let yourself be sucked into the myth of the "saintly poor". You are allowed these things and you are amazing at making your resources stretch. Every now and then you have to try to let even that go just for a bit and let the warm water and the little comforts refill your cup. It's actually necessary.

    :::

Spoilered in case you don't want any more comment.

Thought I would share here for a bit of fun to see what other suggestions I get. I also have some chuck steak in the freezer and a pretty good pantry. My ideas so far include - pumpkin and parsip soup - maybe grilling those capsicums as a side dish - mashed potatoes and a hearty stew (onions and carrots) But I am open to suggestions!

What is your meal planning style? Any good meal planning tips? I am trying to get better at meal planning because I always start off strong then get bored / run out of food at the end of the week. For while I have been doing a big cook on Sunday but this week I am trying a basic menu and cook as I go. Hoping that having a plan will make it easier. My plan (one person) is - red lentil curry + coconut rice (3 serves made today) - instant pot spag Bol (3 serves made Monday night) - a beef stir-fry (X 2 serves) made wed night - quick ramen noodles + stock and frozen veg in between Ideally I would prep veg today but I have been away and am tired and can't be bothered so will prep as I go. What other things are people doing?

Recommendations for a good developer (Ubuntu) laptop

My old xps13 is old in the tooth and the new ones have some things I don't like. So I am after recommendations. My preferences * Linux (Ubuntu/Debian friendly). Happy to wipe and install and will check compatibility beforehand but if anyone has a Linux daily driver they love let me know * good CPU and decent RAM (32gb would be nice) * Lightweight - smaller preferred (currently on a 13" and happy) * Touchscreen would be nice * Usb-c * Decent battery life I have access to other machines for heavy GPU stuff that's not as important as CPU and RAM. Uses: * Programming/terminal use * Reading docs and papers * Watching movies etc * No gaming That's my wishlist. What do you suggest, Aussie tech friends?
