Why does it matter? We can't understand the subjective experience of rocks any more than we can bacteria. Why should we rule out their capacity and not bacteria's? There's no more evidence that one has more of a conscious subjective experience than the other, living or not.

By your logic, shouldn't we opt to be more inclusive of rocks if they could potentially have some sort of experience that we have no current understanding of?

If you don't have any evidentiary basis for your inclusiveness, then that makes it completely arbitrary. Why not start worrying about potential cruelty to non-living things like air, or rocks as well?

Agreed. In the long term it's better for consumers if there is competition, but that also means being an informed consumer, making good buying decisions and not being blindly loyal to any particular brand.

If anything, Intel's lack of transparency should speak volumes. They're hoping to just mostly ignore the problem until it blows over. I still think it's more severe than they're letting on, but only time will tell. They're in full damage control mode right now.

Anyone who gets scared off of buying Intel CPU's until they see how this plays out is making a sound decision IMO. Consumers shouldn't accept this kind of behaviour.

On the flip side, this could also make for some potentially good deals on unaffected SKUs.

And now we have evidence to suggest that we were wrong, thus there is a moral imperative to act based off this new information. There is no evidence that bacteria or similar organisms are capable of pain or suffering. If you want to just disregard all science and biology, that's your prerogative I suppose.

Although yeast is technically living, it's more similar to bacteria than animals or other living creatures. It doesn't feel pain and isn't a sentient being - there is absolutely no reason not to consume yeast or foods made with yeast.

    From the article:

1.4 million fentanyl pills totaling 152.98 kilograms.

    This is probably better phrasing.

The weight of the pills is 153kg, not the weight of the fentanyl within the pills. That is substantially different. Like orders of magnitude off.

NPR made it a point to say that some observers worry that the media attention Hoover’s case has drawn could undermine an organ-transplant system with a waiting list of more than 100,000 people. A professor of medical ethics with whom NPR spoke said all indications are that cases like Hoover’s are generally “one-offs that hopefully we’ll be able to get to the bottom of and prevent from ever happening again”.

Obviously the whole thing is horrifying, but it doesn't move the needle much for me on my personal choice to donate or not.

That's wild. Did you need a special program to parse stuff out of the data stream? I guess it would mostly come in as http reaponses, so it wouldn't be too hard, but still an interesting problem.

Just to give an idea of the unlikelihood we're talking about here, you can model this as a Bernoulli process with a binomial distribution.

If N is the number of beings potentially snapped, then (√N)/2 is the standard deviation. (If you're curious about why, you can read more here.) So for 8.2 billion people, the standard deviation is ~90,000. The chance of being more than ~3 standard deviations below the mean is 0.1%. That means there's only a 0.1% chance of snapping less than 4,099,720,200 people.

I would think it's basically a coin flip for each living thing. It's possible, for example, that all humans survive, however the probability is so astronomically small, it's functionally impossible.

Same with gut biome. Even with several billion attempts, the probability that even 60% of any individual's trillion gut microbes get snapped would be essentially functionally impossible.

People like him get popular by manufacturing controversy.

(The Center Square) - California is spending $1.7 million per year housing and treating each “sexually violent predator” discharged from state mental hospitals and in the process of transitioning to the community under care and supervision from a third-party contractor, a new state audit found.

Wow, $1,700,000 per person per year sounds rather astronomical...

Between fiscal years 2003-2004 and 2023-2024 California paid almost $93 million to Liberty Healthcare to house, treat, supervise, and monitor 56 individuals the state has designated as “sexually violent predators,”

    OK, that sounds more reasonable...

     $93,000,000 / (20 * 56) = $83,036

So which is it, $1.7M or $83K? Because that's a rather substantial difference.

Am I missing something here? I can't find any sources in the article. Did they just make the first figure up?

  • I was going to make pizza on Friday, but I messed up when stretching my dough, and it seized up, so I had to rest it and re-rise, and so change of plans! I had left over curry and just made the tofu cutlets by shallow frying in a small pan to minimize oil usage. As always, any questions or feedback welcome, and happy to provide recipes if anyone wants them! \^_\^

I happened across some store bought vegan pepperoni, and decided I'd do one of the most simple pizzas in existance: the NY style pepperoni pizza. It totally wasn't because I was lazy and it takes like almost zero effort. My dough caught on the peel as I was shimmying it on to the griddle, so I kinda got this weird teardrop-shaped pizza. Oh well. (: There's really just something very comforting about a basic-ass slice like this. It's not fancy or pretentious, just delicious.

So I've decided to make pizza every Friday this summer. This is \#3, but I declined to post the first two because they contained a slightly controversial brand plant based meat substitute. This one has **vegan blue cheese, caramelized onions, button mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, balsamic reduction and pear slices**. I meant to add a bit of arugula, but I forgot. A little fresh basil probably would have been good too. Oh yeah, I was going to have it last night (y'know, on Friday like I said) but some stuff came up so I had to delay a night. Feel free to ask for any recipes or whatever! I generally follow Adam Ragusa's NY style pizza recipe, but he's not vegan so if you don't want to give him additional traffic, I can probably answer any questions you might have. **If you have any suggestions for my next pizza, I'd love to hear it! \^\^**

I've been learning to cook all sorts of Indian recipes lately. The samosa are store bought, cuz who has time for that. Everything else is made from scratch. I'll probably get around to makeing my own samosas too, some day. Will post recipes if anyone is interested. ^^

A riff on the classic NY style pizza. Obviously with all the extra toppings, and a cheddar style "cheese", it's not in any way accurate, but it's what I happened to have on hand. Dough & Sauce: * Adam Ragusea's [NY Style Pizza v2](https://youtu.be/SDpCzJw2xm4) [Content Warning: recipe is not fully vegan. It contains cow milk.] "Cheese": * Smoked cheddar style vegan grating block Toppings: * Red onion, mushroom, vegan sausage, fresh basil
