A 24-year-old man who assaulted a female convenience store clerk in the southeastern city of Jinju last year, calling her a "feminist" due to her short hair, has been sentenced to three years in prison in his appeal trial. The court recognized the attack as a "misogynistic crime," marking the first time in South Korea that misogyny was acknowledged as a motive in a criminal ruling. The victim, who lost her hearing due to the attack, expressed relief at the "meaningful ruling." The Changwon District Court's criminal division upheld Wednesday the original three-year sentence for the attacker, 24, citing "groundless hatred toward women" as the motive behind the crime. The incident occurred in April last year, when the 24-year-old assaulted a female part-time worker at a convenience store in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, because of her short hairstyle, calling her a "feminist."

[Donald Trump](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/donaldtrump)’s campaign may be failing to reach thousands of voters they hope to turn out in Arizona and Nevada, with roughly a quarter of door-knocks done by America Pac flagged by its canvassing app as potentially fraudulent, according to leaked data and people familiar with the matter. The potentially fake door-knocks – when canvassers falsely claim to have visited a home – could present a serious setback for Trump as he and Kamala Harris remain even in the polls with fewer than 20 days until an election. The Trump campaign earlier this year [outsourced the bulk of its ground game to America Pac](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/sep/26/trump-voter-turnout-elon-musk-pac), the political action committee founded by Elon Musk, betting that spending millions to turn out Trump supporters, especially those who don’t typically vote, would boost returns. But leaked America Pac data obtained by the Guardian shows that roughly 24% of the door-knocks in [Arizona](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/arizona) and 25% of the door-knocks in Nevada this week were flagged under “unusual survey logs” by the Campaign Sidekick canvassing app.

Oxfam condemns in the strongest terms the killing in Gaza today of four water engineers and workers from the Khuzaa municipality who were working with our strategic partner the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU).   The four men were killed on their way to conduct repairs to water infrastructure in Khuzaa, east of Khan Younis. Despite prior coordination with Israeli authorities their clearly-marked vehicle was bombed. Oxfam stands in solidarity with the CMWU, their partners and the families of the victims.   Their deaths deepen the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza where access to clean water is already severely compromised.   Dozens of engineers, civil servants and humanitarian workers have been killed in Israeli airstrikes throughout this war. They were all working on essential services to keep Gaza's fragile infrastructure running. Despite their movements being coordinated with the Israeli authorities by the CMWU and the Palestinian Water Authority, to ensure their safety, they were still targeted.

A three-judge panel on Thursday ruled that Tennessee doctors who provide emergency abortions to protect the life of the mother cannot have their medical licenses revoked or face other disciplinary actions while a lawsuit challenging the state’s [sweeping abortion ban](https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-abortion-exemption-f9c1ab86edcfb358f225e7c006cae618) continues.  The ruling also outlined specific pregnancy-related conditions that would now qualify as “medical necessity exceptions” under the ban, which currently does not include exceptions for fetal anomalies or for victims of rape or incest. “This lack of clarity is evidenced by the confusion and lack of consensus within the Tennessee medical community on the circumstances requiring necessary health- and life-saving abortion care,” the ruling stated. “The evidence presented underscores how serious, difficult, and complex these issues are and raises significant questions as to whether the medical necessity exception is sufficiently narrow to serve a compelling state interest.”

An Elon Musk-funded group called Future Coalition PAC is targeting Muslim voters in Michigan and Jewish voters in Pennsylvania with diametrically opposed political advertisements about Kamala Harris. In areas of Michigan with relatively large Muslim populations, the Super PAC is painting Harris as a close friend of Israel and is suggesting that she is beholden to the beliefs of her Jewish husband Doug Emhoff; in parts of Pennsylvania with relatively large Jewish populations, the advertisements call Harris antisemitic and say she “support\[s] denying Israel the weapons needed to defeat the Hamas terrorists who massacred thousands.”  Meanwhile, a related PAC also funded by Musk is microtargeting likely Black voters on Snapchat with ads that says Kamala Harris is trying to ban menthol cigarettes (surveys have shown that [*81 percent of Black smokers use menthols*](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-menthol-cigarettes-have-disproportionately-affected-black-americans?ref=404media.co), and big tobacco has disproportionately marketed menthol cigarettes to Black Americans).

The U.S. government’s road safety agency is again investigating Tesla’s [“Full Self-Driving” system](https://apnews.com/article/tesla-crash-police-car-lights-flashing-automated-bc96e19cad9b5e2de5d13846b0f744c7), this time after getting reports of crashes in low-visibility conditions, including one that killed a pedestrian. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents that it opened the probe on Thursday with the company reporting four crashes after Teslas entered areas of low visibility, including sun glare, fog and airborne dust. In addition to the pedestrian’s death, another crash involved an injury, the agency said. Investigators will look into the ability of “Full Self-Driving” to “detect and respond appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions, and if so, the contributing circumstances for these crashes.”

After a difficult year that’s seen multiple games fall short of sales expectations, original *Life Is Strange* developer Don’t Nod is implementing a “reorganization project” that could impact up to 69 jobs – or, as the French union that represents Don’t Nod workers points out, 29 percent of Don’t Nod’s Paris workforce. In light of this, the union, STJV, has denounced company leadership and called for workers to mobilize and defend their jobs. Don’t Nod has [previously said](https://www.ign.com/articles/life-is-strange-creator-dont-nod-has-rough-start-to-the-year-presses-pause-on-two-projects) that its latest releases, *Jusant *and *Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden*, fell short of “commercial expectations,” leading it to “temporarily” pause two other in-development projects. Despite a focus on the upcoming and thus far well-received *Lost Records: Bloom & Rage*, Don’t Nod [now says](https://www.dontnod-bourse.com/en/financial-information/press-releases?ID=ACTUS-0-88278) that “amid deteriorating results” it has been “compelled to consider a reorganization project to safeguard its competitiveness in an increasingly demanding and competitive ecosystem.”   STJV, which earlier this year [published a post criticizing Don’t Nod](https://www.stjv.fr/en/2024/02/dont-nod-ascension-or-free-fall/) for a burnout-inducing work environment in which "each project erratically follows another," has [deemed](https://www.stjv.fr/2024/10/a-dont-nod-le-seul-plan-pour-lavenir-est-le-plan-de-licenciement/) the layoff plan “the climax of a series of catastrophic decisions, denounced for a long time by workers' representatives.”   “Management is hiding being 'the state of the economy' and 'a very competitive market' as excuses for its failures, without ever questioning its inconsistent decisions, which have been harmful to the studio and its workers,” wrote Don’t Nod’s STJV union section in a post published today.

In June, the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) gave employees a presentation and tech demo called “AI-mazing Tech-venture” in which Google’s Gemini AI was presented as a tool archives employees could use to “enhance productivity.” During a demo, the AI was queried with questions about the John F. Kennedy assassination, according to a [*copy of the presentation*](https://cdn.muckrock.com/foia_files/2024/09/19/2024_Information_Services_Town_Hall_Presentation_Redacted.pdf?ref=404media.co) obtained by 404 Media using a public records request.   In December, NARA plans to launch a public-facing AI-powered chatbot called “Archie AI,” 404 Media has learned. “The National Archives has big plans for AI,” a NARA spokesperson told 404 Media. It’s going to be essential to how we conduct our work, how we scale our services for Americans who want to be able to access our records from anywhere, anytime, and how we ensure that we are ready to care for the records being created today and in the future.” [*Employee chat logs*](https://cdn.muckrock.com/foia_files/2024/09/19/EVT506703_Chat_Log.docx_Redacted.pdf?ref=404media.co) given during the presentation show that National Archives employees are concerned about the idea that AI tools will be used in archiving, a practice that is inherently concerned with accurately recording history.  One worker who attended the presentation told 404 Media “I suspect they're going to introduce it to the workplace. I'm just a person who works there and hates AI bullshit.”

Acting on false claims from a white man under investigation, body camera video shows officers unexpectedly go after McAlpin, punch him in the head at least 10 times, Taser him four times, and wrap their arms around his neck.

[According to a Thursday report in the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/10/pennsylvania-senate-david-mccormick-investments), McCormick — who is running against three-term incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) — was found to have held the Russian debt through his firm, Bridgewater Associates, between 2017 and 2021. Sovereign debt is a major source of funding for countries to pay for operations and service debt, and has become increasingly subjected to sanctions since 2019. McCormick has previously taken full ownership of Bridgewater's decisions during his tenure as CEO — a position he held until 2022, when he unsuccessfully ran in Pennsylvania's Republican Senate primary (he went on to lose to Mehmet Oz). [In a 2023 speech](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQUbhRBV5eA) to the American Enterprise Institute, McCormick told the audience: "Whatever we did I'm responsible for."

As Elon Musk likes to do whenever disaster hits somewhere in the world, Hurricane Helene was another opportunity to show off his generosity and make himself part of the news. This time, Musk made headlines with a promise that SpaceX Starlink would be free for 30 days to help in places where fiber and cellular infrastructure might have been knocked offline. More than 200 people have been identified as dead in the disaster. But the catch is that it’s really not free at all. It really looks like not much more than a glorified new-customer promotion. For one, anyone interested in taking up the offer still has to pay approximately $400 for the dish itself (including shipping and tax) and they’re getting automatically rolled into a $120 per-month contract when the free month ends.

[Florida](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/florida/) Gov. [Ron DeSantis](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/ron-desantis/) is putting the full weight of the Florida government behind an effort to defeat a ballot measure that would protect [abortion](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/abortion/) access in the state — including by enlisting government lawyers in a campaign to silence a young mother with terminal brain cancer who is warning of the danger Florida’s strict ban poses to women like her. This November, Florida residents will have the opportunity to vote on [Amendment 4](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/amendment-4/); if passed, the measure will enshrine the right to abortion “before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health” in Florida’s constitution. The pitch is broadly popular with Floridians: A September poll showed the measure attracting support from [76 percent](https://floridapolitics.com/archives/694985-poll-the-free-state-of-florida-may-not-be-free-enough-for-voters-this-year/) of voters.  But DeSantis, who has signed two separate abortion bans into law — restricting the procedure first at 15 weeks, then 6 weeks gestation — is desperately trying to tank Amendment 4. First, he worked with the Heritage Foundation to [add language to the ballot measure](https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/ron-desantis-heritage-foundation-florida-abortion-measure-trump-1235095689/) implying that relegalizing abortion would have a negative fiscal impact on the state. Amid that baseless warning, state agencies began [spending public money on TV and radio ads](https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/desantis-abortion-florida-doctors-amendment-1235106222/) peddling misinformation about the measure, as well as a website that claims Amendment 4 “threatens women’s safety.”  Now, DeSantis is trying to keep a cancer patient named Caroline from sharing the story of her abortion, by threatening to criminally prosecute TV stations that carry the Amendment 4 ad featuring her story.

McDonald’s has some beef with today’s largest meat packers. The fast food giant is suing the U.S. meat industry’s “Big Four” — Tyson, JBS, Cargill and National Beef Packing Company — and their subsidiaries, alleging a price fixing scheme for beef specifically. In a federal complaint, filed Friday in New York, McDonald’s accused the companies of anticompetitive measures such as collectively limiting supply to boost prices and charge “illegally inflated” amounts. This collusion caused the beef market to become “a monopoly in which direct purchasers were forced to buy at prices dictated by (the meat packers),” McDonald’s suit reads — later noting that the injury it has sustained as one of those buyers is what “antitrust laws were designed to prevent.” McDonald’s alleges that the meat packers’ conspiracy dates back nearly a decade, at least as early as January 2015, and continues today. Its suit argues these companies’ actions violate the Sherman Act, a federal antitrust law.

*Women are not some piece of collectively owned community property the disposition of which is decided by majority vote. Forcing a woman to carry an unwanted, not-yet-viable fetus to term violates her constitutional rights to liberty and privacy, even taking into consideration whatever bundle of rights the not-yet-viable fetus may have.

    And:

For these women, the liberty of privacy means that they alone should choose whether they serve as human incubators for the five months leading up to viability. It is not for a legislator, a judge, or a Commander from The Handmaid’s Tale to tell these women what to do with their bodies during this period when the fetus cannot survive outside the womb any more so than society could -- or should -- force them to serve as a human tissue bank or to give up a kidney for the benefit of another.
