So, the scheme is basically to have you, the publisher, invest some money into marketing the game, to get potential players aware of it, then have them pay a one-time premium to actually play it, if they're interested.

Given that sunaurus has explicitly declined to defederate from unpopular and highly-blocked instances, stating that disliking content is not a reason to invoke defederation, I'd have to say this is the least-censoring instance I'm aware of. At least at the admin level.

At the community level, communities can moderate and censor themselves however they like, but I certainly can't think of any examples I'd call censor-heavy.

I decided to split the difference, by leaving in the gates, but fusing off the functionality. That way, if I was right about Itanium and what AMD would do, Intel could very quickly get back in the game with x86. As far as I'm concerned, that's exactly what did happen.

I'm sure he got a massive bonus for this decision, when all the suits realized he was right and he'd saved their asses. /s

A country putting tariffs on imports doesn't necessarily mean it's being anti-competitive, or anything nefarious.

In this example, the argument generally goes that China's EV market is so cheap, compared to the US's, because the Chinese government subsidizes it, I.E. gives EV makers free money so they can lower costs or expand infrastructure, which in turn leads to lower prices. Thus, a US tarrif is just attempting to re-level the playing field. How much truth there is to this, I don't really know.

And this, in TURN, doesn't necessarily mean that China is being anti-competitive either. There's nothing wrong with them saying "Having a robust EV infrastructure is good for our country, and we think it's going to be very important for our future, so we're going to invest heavily into that."

It did in my Update 6-8 playthrough, where I had a walkway similar to this. I was going for a "belts-only" playthrough, at the time, and I never got past Phase 6 with it. Figured I'd try again now in 1.0, while doing a truck/train-heavy playthrough with my wife. I'm actually a little bit sad that "belt-only" is so much easier now, with depots, but I really can't justify building a giant belt-fed hub anymore.

I AM using the walkway to run belts in cases where resources aren't adjacent to, or inside, the factory, like for my coal power plant.

Option 2 seems like the optimal idea, on paper, if Option 1 isn't feasible, but Option 3 doesn't really bother me, if there's trouble with Option 2's implementation. I don't consider privacy at an IP-tracking level really that much of a concern. This is a social media platform, my privacy is my anonymity.

It sounds like maybe Lemmy itself coupd use some enhancement with regard to how and when it decides to proxy, and what it does when proxying fails. If we can get a better experience by swapping to Option 3, until such enhancements are maybe made in the future, that sounds fair to me.

The issue last year was with someone, or many someones, uploading CSAM (child sexual abuse material, I.E. child porn). Like, SPAMMING it out to a bunch of Lemmy servers, which then federated it out across the whole network, in REALLY high volume. Obviously, no one wants to see that, but the legal concern is liability. For some servers, depending on where they're hosted, that means they can be held responsible for "hosting" the content, once it's been federated to them.

So, inspired by [@Blisterexe@lemmy.zip](https://lemmy.zip/u/Blisterexe) with https://lemm.ee/post/44886389, I figured it's time to try building a skyscraper. I've actually never built one before. This'll be replacing my starter copper sheet here, as well as a separate factory for Wire and Cable. I'm going to be using this Copper node, though, so this has to come down first. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/a8d79b9c-41e0-4ee4-a097-cb17f4479c6b.jpeg) Since I'm just gonna be repeating the same floor 8 times, it's definitely beneficial to blueprint the whole thing. I hate it. Utterly. Looking back at the inspiration, I realize there's only ONE fully-glass wall, so you don't get the whole "see through the entire building thing" up close. Next time, I'll see if putting in walls on the sides and rear solves this issue. Also, you might be able to slightly notice, I forgot a piece of glass on the side walls, anyway. Fingers crossed.

Passwords have problems, but passkeys have more

As I understand it (and assuming you know what asymmetric keys are)...

It's about using public/private key pairs and swapping them in wherever you would use a password. Except, passwords are things users can actually remember in their head, and are short enough to be typed in to a UI. Asymmetric keys are neither of these things, so trying to actually implement passkeys means solving this newly-created problem of "how the hell do users manage them" and the tech world seems to be collectively failing to realize that the benefit isn't worth the cost. That last bit is subjective opinion, of course, but I've yet to see any end-users actually be enthusiastic about passkeys.

If that's still flying over your head, there's a direct real-world corollary that you're probably already familiar with, but I haven't seen mentioned yet: Chip-enabled Credit Cards. Chip cards still use symmetric cryptography, instead of asymmetric, but the "proper" implementation of passkeys, in my mind, would be basically chip cards. The card keeps your public/private key pair on it, with embedded circuitry that allows it to do encryption with the private key, without ever having to expose it. Of course, the problem would be the same as the problem with chip cards in the US, the one that quite nearly killed the existence of them: everyone that wants to support or use passkeys would then need to have a passkey reader, that you plug into when you want to login somewhere. We could probably make a lot of headway on this by just using USB, but that would make passkey cards more complicated, more expensive, and more prone to being damaged over time. Plus, that doesn't really help people wanting to login to shit with their phones.

Automated certificate lifecycle management is going to be the norm for businesses moving forward.

This seems counter-intuitive to the goal of "improving internet security". Automation is a double-edged sword. Convenient, sure, but also an attack vector, one where malicious activity is less likely to be noticed, because actual people aren't involved in tbe process, anymore.

We've got ample evidence of this kinda thing with passwords: increasing complexity requirements and lifetime requirements improves security, only up to a point. Push it too far, and it actually ends up DECREASING security, because it encourages bad practices to get around the increased burden of implementation.

Instead, the whole underside of the building ramps down an inward, and the flat part in the center is the only spot where footings sit. I love stuff like that. When you get halfway through a build and realize you have to change plans and the way you end up getting it to work is something you'd never have come up with on its own, but it looks REALLY good.

    2
  • I was asked yesterday about what it took to make this circular platform, and it was a NIGHTMARE at the time, so I thought I'd do a post about just that, in detail. The standard technique for circles is pretty simple. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/34286cd4-55c3-430d-b814-3ef7de7138b2.jpeg) Just start with a cross, mapping out the radius/diameter you want. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/fa193913-7681-4aec-93e4-dc12a09ff533.jpeg) Staring at the center of the center foundation, and holding CTRL, you can scroll to rotate the foundation in 5 degree increments. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/5f2c18c2-8d42-45e7-bfb4-3b50bc463fe6.jpeg) Place another under it, to match the height of the rest... ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/b5527e8f-7efd-4fc0-818e-b00dcb40f59d.jpeg) ...then, you can zoop out another T, overlaid on the first. Repeat until circle is complete. The easy circles to make are 88m (11 foundations) for 10 degree increments, and 168m (21 foundations) for 5 degree increments. That is, with those dimensions, the corners come out very close to perfect, close enough that you don't notice unless you're looking for imperfections. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/f7285eab-2cb6-4007-a27c-698882a3070e.jpeg) However, these circle sizes didn't work, for this build. The Space Elevator has a footprint of 54m x 54m, so I went with a circle diameter of 64 meters (8 foundations) to make sure that there's at least a half-foundation of walking space around the whole thing. That's what we have here, 28 meters on all sides of center, which equates to 3 foundations, nudged away from center by a half-foundation. The gap to be filled in at the end. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/eb7ea5c9-81f8-411b-87f1-8c8e90b3683a.jpeg) Problem with this circle size is that the overlapping is VERY noticable. The idea for dealing with this is essentially to replace each of the full foundations with a pair of half-foundations, overlapping just enough to get the corners to perfectly touch, at each segment. To get corners to align perfectly, you have to identify the exact point where you want the corner to be. In this case, that's actually impossible to do perfectly (as far as I know), as the spot where we want the corners to be is the cross-point of the overlapping edges. It's possible to identify this point freehanded, using pillars and barriers, but since this is a circle, we can actually make it simpler. We can just say "I don't care where the corner are, as long as they all line up on the circle." So, it's MUCH easier to just identify the center point of each foundation edge. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/65a01654-cb03-4a59-bce4-724c17b3c759.jpeg) Because I'm paranoid, I built out an extra extra "placeholder" piece for each edge, so if I screw up, a corner, I still have the desired point identified. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/76e11e78-4891-4595-8829-6751a7bc7850.jpeg) Now, we can build a perfectly-overlapped edge between two of the desired corner points, by first identifying them... ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/70df57f4-ecd9-4aaa-95ca-5a166423a806.jpeg) ...then pulling a Freeform beam between them, then snapping pillars to each end. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/62969e09-6656-411e-affe-6693e4a3fd66.jpeg) With the pillars, we have a snapping point for foundations that has both the location of the corner, and the desired angle of the edge. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/e77aba8a-b37f-43b0-b099-2d935dbf1c65.jpeg) A quick nudge, and that one's done. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/ebec2140-225a-4e73-9d3d-c4092d7556f0.jpeg) Repeated for the opposite side of that edge, then repeated for the next edge over. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/38faaa12-c92d-47e7-9ccc-432760be0bf2.jpeg) We have in-fact achieved a perfectly joined corner. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/342132f0-018b-4c37-95da-4b121576a1aa.jpeg) I am NOT building out an entire circle of this again. In fact, in the original build, I had to do TWO of these circles, because the lower level that the Space Elevator platform sits on was built this exact same way, but with an extra 2 foundations in diameter. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/2ad7feaf-a7c1-49d0-b20b-d007bd4664a4.jpeg) Looks pretty freakin' good in concrete, even up close. Although, it looks much less good if you color the concrete, since in any color other than pure white, the edge lines show up darker again, just like with FICSIT foundations. Of course, it looks basically flawless with asphalt. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/5b04c48e-0504-4e33-a881-9e33a374574b.jpeg) Advantage of perfect corners means we can have perfect cornering of barriers or railings or whatever else you want to line it with. No walls, though, unfortunately, since we still can't overcome the limit of not having half-width walls. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/6407a999-d117-48a4-a7c6-d0be3a87589c.jpeg) The "wall" covering I used in the real build was just four pillars, snapped neatly to the edges of the half-foundations, and painted with Carbon Steel. I've painted them different colors here, to illustrate the point. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/713348f6-7220-4c4d-9c91-28e125334edb.jpeg) Finally, we can fill in the center. In the original build, I believe I also deleted the inner-most ring of circular foundations, and just made the center grid bigger to overlap. The Space Elevator sits on top of it, so it's not really noticeable anyway, but the perfectionist in me is always worried about using more build pieces than necessary, since there's eventually an upper limit.

The hell is that summary, AI-generated? Why yes, people DO work inside the TikToc building.

Talk about burying the lede, by not elaborating on that title, like the article does. "Stripping" does not mean that teenagers are being "stripped" from the platform, or from feeds, like I figured. It literally means that THEY are stripping. OnlyFans style. For gifts. Jesus fuck.

  • A little HQ area I made for myself in my solo game, like 2 weeks ago. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/fdb6a249-8e64-4f3f-9206-fd7123273659.jpeg) First time I've actually been compelled to use actual lights, instead of just signage. Probably the last. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/9b106f86-58d4-4480-981e-3dc4056b7090.jpeg) Total accident that I ended up with like 6 berry plants RIGHT at the entrance to the place. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/5c43f676-51d5-43b3-8940-67d21cec3e8e.jpeg) BOY have I been loving the Carbon Steel cosmetic in this save.

Been getting a lot of instability out of pictrs the last two days. Nothing in the week before that. By instability, I'm talking 500 errors when uploading images (POST https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image). They seem pretty much random, I can get around the errors by just repeatedly trying to upload the same file until it works. As far as I can tell, there's nothing I'm doing wrong, trying to upload images too large produces a different, and much more reasonable, error. And there's no info at all in the response, except for the 500 code itself.

Hosting in-laws this weekend, so we're in backlog territory. This was the first build my wife and I did together, about a week into 1.0. Although we only got around to finishing it out last week, after getting steel and signs and such running. Actually, she finished out the buildings, but I'd still like to put some finishing touches here on the Water Extractors. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/83f43b2c-2dac-41d6-ad4c-3d0fbabcaa62.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/55ff943a-e579-4c4d-8285-6e5e68b168ad.jpeg) This resource trunk line was mostly my concept, with a few suggestions from my wife... ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/408a3c75-fabb-40ac-b703-8309d996de8c.jpeg) ...while the buildings were almost entirely my wife, with me just doing the belt and pipe routing. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/2dcf6a33-caf5-4ffe-9f2e-7f5672add42d.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/920fc470-fb66-4d4a-9eb2-63effb8b6398.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/1648dcd3-8d8a-4ce0-8d80-bc0a76159306.jpeg) She likes purple. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/339858ad-50ae-49b6-aa61-8461ad6a9163.jpeg) This is the entrance I need to build out. I'd like to do something that highlights the tree and the berry plant, in some fashion. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/1ef95870-30c6-40dd-bcb5-af1cfe8e1ea0.jpeg) Goddamnit, I love these. I need an excuse to use this design again.

Got a great start on a new Iron Rod factory today. Mostly because I leaned heavily on blueprinting and repeating the bulk of the work ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/2130f33d-7eb6-44a4-bd1b-de600da379a8.jpeg) Going with a dedicated logistics/maintenance floor again, because it helped me fit into a 32mx32m blueprint footprint. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/2b2b5147-9e99-4e89-b65f-cdcf9e2bb5aa.jpeg) I don't care if these illuminated barriers are unoriginal at this point, they're freakin' gorgeous. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/eddec643-3cda-417f-9dba-1aa80b6181e8.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/bbe12b81-e06f-4c71-837f-29284914c505.jpeg) Nice thing is that with this design, there's a lot more load balancing going on, as opposed to manifolding. Each of the 4 wings has 2 smelters, which get even amounts of resources, and feeds 2 constructors, evenly. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/2313126b-c2af-4b59-9018-1fb07cb3246f.jpeg) Implemented this little idea for an exhaust vent, above each smelter. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/6929f257-3c03-4cee-92c2-60d612de9059.jpeg)

I'm going to regret staying up this late, but I got the factory done that I started yesterday. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/e50764b9-4fd2-46c2-85a4-2e241fb86234.jpeg) I love the look of the frame pillars, but this was TEDIOUS as all hell to build. Mainly because these pillars aren't actually hollow, you can't target inside of them. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/1faa5246-1d0f-4aee-a5ad-78523baaf079.jpeg) I mentioned yesterday that I did something interesting with the Iron Ingot line, where I'm alternating between inputs and outputs, and you can kinda see it here, running underneath the catwalk. The smelters here feed into the line, then some lifts pull off of it and feed into the constructors on the upper level, then *another* set of smelters feed into the belt, and so on. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/b2c5dae9-2202-4bfa-a018-448f4c402ded.jpeg) Same thing, but a view from the outside, on the ground floor. Also featuring the iron ore feed, and the plate/screw outputs hanging above it. Also also, the pillars supporting the detached upper level. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/f5fc6386-281a-4637-8c1e-e3693c713088.jpeg) Depot and sinking logistics, and also some nice hanging lighting. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/405287d4-59c8-4c9c-973b-ee4616fbf7b7.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/1182a644-65f0-4d04-b3a5-1dcab7444bc5.jpeg) I like the little white stripe along the bottom. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/a1ad468e-6662-4249-a5d0-34dd2c27ee5d.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/82266e3e-e98d-4078-9f55-8c27dd8ae835.jpeg) And with that done, I can finally clean up most of this nonsense. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/3b899cd0-988e-487c-95b2-be0a41e17cc3.jpeg)

Today was D&D main story night for my wife, so I'm back to my solo save, starting a new long-term factory for Iron Plates and Screws. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/f8a1af0a-f204-474d-849b-29e10583df0a.jpeg) I had the thought to try out a setup with multiple floors, where you can look down on the first floor, from the second, and that morphed into this stacked setup. Really liking it, so far. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/fd8f4a63-09a5-4c33-8dda-592c887498d4.jpeg) This also turned into a manifold strategy I haven't done before, with a manifold that is mixed between providers and consumers. I.E. the Iron Ingot line alternates between smelters adding to it, and constructors pulling off. The numbers work out, but we'll see if it ends up working the way I think it should.

Didn't get a whole lot of time today, but I think I can call this one done. I'll probably come back 2 weeks from now to get the trucks running, and find something to redo, but I'm ready to move on, for now. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/65a1c1d2-2537-48ec-9761-821a8dee7c48.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/8f3233fa-11f6-449b-bc4b-48a2195eb03c.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/422a5681-3810-43b5-a945-da7a21e1ab89.jpeg) *sigh* We're never getting a fix for this, are we?

I ended up spending way more time than I wanted jerking around with the blueprint system, so I still didn't finish the whole Quartz factory. But the only thing left is the depot and shipping wings. The main building, the mine, and the resource transport are all finished. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/9166e784-c5d9-4336-a314-7ff2a52ad9f4.jpeg) Blueprinting this trunk line in particular was what took up all the time. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/8b10c881-37b7-4b51-b61c-c7ed5ab6fc55.jpeg) Happy with the result, though. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/8fad3b7f-4c3c-4fa7-a390-3fdabd825794.jpeg) Buggy lighting in caves is buggy. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/855f5853-63e9-415c-ad4e-4fa101ba7ece.jpeg) Did you know there's actually no height limit on lifts, if they're placed between two floor holes? ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/6044b4b3-a0d1-41e5-9c76-7fc461cc937e.jpeg) Had to come up with something a little weird to close the gap on this ladder. This also took a LOT of time to get the positioning just right. Also really happy with it. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/98d10f3f-308d-48ef-aa2f-ddd3fa9f4e22.jpeg) With the color scheme established, for the trunk line, I was able to finish off coloring and lighting inside the building pretty quickly. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/61d5d7ec-a372-41e9-b59f-a8236702e947.jpeg)

Because this community deserves more activity. Today was spent setting up a basic Quartz/Silica factory, from one of the pure nodes in the giant Rocky Desert cave. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/1a3737ca-e3cb-41ce-b6e9-7707e12e0354.jpeg) ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/6940edbd-52b0-4cf0-8f76-dab3d1231c2b.jpeg) Got it most of the way done. Need to finish running power along the input belt line, finish enclosing the Depot wing, bring the road up to meet the building, setup truck stations, and color and light the whole thing.

So, I thought Hexbear defederated from us a little while back, and we, in turn, defederated from them. Why do I keep seeing occasional (new) Hexbear posts in the "All" feed, lately? Did the defederation get reversed? Is it somehow a bug?

The site name's a play on "The Onion" so it's gotta be satire, right? I couldn't find an about page to confirm.

After watching the first couple of episodes, my wife and I were considering having our 8-year-old watch it with us. Then I noticed the TV-MA rating. Not looking for spoilers, but like, is the show gonna take a bit of a turn, eventually? There hasn't been anything CLOSE to TV-M-worth thus far, in my mind.
